Bobbie A. Solley is a single lady who lives in her hometown of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She used to teach 5th and 6th grades, but she wanted to learn more about how to help students become better writers, so she went to graduate school in Georgia and focused on writing. She is now a professor in the Department of Elementary and Special Education at Middle Tennessee State University, and teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in reading and writing. She and Trixie Smith are co-directors of the Middle Tennessee Writing Project which is a huge project based on Bobbie’s vision to change the culture of writing in Middle Tennessee from one that is negative and driven by testing, to one where the writing process is valued and where strengths are celebrated and used to build new skills ( NWP). They are raising awareness of the need for change in the way writing is viewed and taught among teachers and administrators all over their state. They do professional development programs for teachers, youth writers’ camps, and they hold a training institute to develop teacher consultants who can go back to their school districts to act as writing consultants who help train fellow teachers. |
